Vaginismus is a condition which affects a woman's ability to engage in any form of vaginal penetration. An uncontrollable reflex causes the muscles in the vagina to tense suddenly. Gynecological examinations or even inserting a tampon can be very painful. Vaginal intercourse is often impossible.The causes are manifold and can be physical or psychological. An effective treatment approach besides relaxing exercises is dilation (stretching) of the vaginal muscles. Furthermore, vibrating stimulation can possibly calm or outwit reflexes.
