Its name is derived from the Semitic word murr (meaning bitter). The myrrh tree is native to Yemen, Ethiopia, the Sudan and Somalia. The resin is obtained by cutting into the bark of the myrrh bush. The gum resin dries and turns into reddish-yellow pieces when exposed to air. Myrrh is used as an air freshener.
