Frankincense is the resin of the Boswellia tree, which belongs to the incense tree family. There are four different species of this plant genus: Arabian frankincense (Boswellia sacra), Coptic frankincense (Boswellia frereana), Ethiopian frankincense (Boswellia papyrifera) and Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata). The different species grow in regions between deserts and mountains in similar climate zones across the earth: the Horn of Africa, southern Arabia and India.

Frankincense is obtained as a white gum resin. Similar to gummi elasticum the resin is obtained by cutting into the bark of the tree, collecting and then drying it.

Frankincense has a balsamic-spicy, lemon-like fragrance which was used for protection, consecration and purification in the ancient world. Burning frankincense (olibanum) was supposed to bring prosperity and wealth into a home. Today frankincense is used as an air freshener.
