Compared to temporary contraception or tubal ligation Essure® - using a new procedure without cutting, hormones or anaesthesia - offers numerous advantages:
- No cutting, burning or scarring
- No going under general anaesthesia
- No hormones
- No guessing - your doctor can confirm when you can rely on Essure for contraception
- Freedom from the pain and recovery time of a tubal ligation
- Short procedure time - Essure only takes about 10 minutes to perform
During the weeks following the procedure, your body and the micro-inserts work together to form a natural barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. During this period, you must continue using another form of contraception (other than a coil).
Three months after the Essure procedure, a doctor will perform an Essure Confirmation Test to verify placement of the micro-inserts, confirming that you can rely on Essure for permanent contraception.
Further Information
Frequently asked questionsIs it reversible?
The procedure is permanent and not reversible. It is only meant to be used by women who are sure they do not want any more children. Reversal may require surgery and there is no data on the safety and effectiveness of reversing the Essure procedure.
Will my periods change after the Essure procedure?
The Essure procedure does not contain hormones, so your body continues its natural cycle. Some women in the clinical studies reported temporary changes in their periods. These changes were likely the result of discontinuing hormone-based contraception.
